City, UTCRI awarded $1.06M U.S. Department of Transportation grant to
advance roadway safety

Funding will support data-driven analysis of high-risk corridors to reduce
crashes

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (January 8, 2026) – The City of Chattanooga and the
University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Research Institute (UTCRI) have been
awarded $1,063,393 in federal funding through the U.S. Department of
Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program to support a
new Roadway Safety Design Technology Platform.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Chattanooga Police Department (CPD) has charged a juvenile in a 2024 homicide.

Incident Number – 24-002665

The suspect is charged with First Degree Murder and Unlawful Possession of a Weapon in connection to the January 9, 2024 shooting in the 7600 block of North Bishop Drive that left a 57-year-old man dead. The suspect was taken into custody in another jurisdiction and will be transported back to Hamilton County.

of defense against fires. But all too often, the Chattanooga Fire
Department finds outdated and non-working smoke alarms in residents’ homes
and that’s very dangerous. It puts their property and their safety at risk.

As 2025 comes to a close, we pause to reflect on a year defined by service, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to protecting our community—while setting our sights on an even stronger 2026.

In 2025, the Chattanooga Fire Department responded to more than 22,000 calls, including 1,016 fires, over 10,018 rescue & EMS calls (46% of our call volume), and more than 1,102 motor vehicle crashes with injuries. There were also more than 1578 “Assist a Citizen” calls.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – On December 28, 2025, at 11:25 p.m., the Chattanooga Police Department responded to reports of shots fired in the 5500 block of Highway 153. When the officers arrived at the scene, the suspect shot at the officers and the officers returned fire. A CPD officer was struck by the suspect’s gunfire.

The Chattanooga Fire Department and Hamilton County EMS responded to the scene and transported the officer to a local hospital. The officer is in stable condition.
