City of Chattanooga Named One of North America’s “100 Best Public Fleets” for Third Consecutive Year

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. April 16th, 2026 — The City of Chattanooga is proud to announce its recognition as one of the 100 Best Public Fleets in North America by the National Automotive Fleet Association (NAFA). This marks the third consecutive year the City’s fleet operations have earned a spot on this prestigious list, underscoring a sustained commitment to efficiency, innovation, and excellence in public service.

For 2026, the City of Chattanooga earned the 80th ranking in the nation. This achievement continues a streak of excellence that includes a 65th-place ranking in 2024 and a 90th-place ranking in 2025.

The "100 Best Fleets" program recognizes peak-performing public fleet organizations. It evaluates departments based on key performance indicators, including operational efficiency, fleet utilization, fuel and emissions reduction, staff development, and the implementation of new technologies.

"Being recognized by NAFA for three straight years is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our fleet management team," said Kenneth Howell, Director of Fleet Management. "Maintaining a top-tier fleet is about more than just maintaining vehicles; it’s about ensuring our first responders, public works crews, and city staff have the reliable tools they need to serve our citizens every single day. Climbing back up the rankings this year shows our commitment to continuous improvement."

By staying within the top 100, Chattanooga remains in the company of the most elite municipal, county, and state agencies across the continent and even surpassing some larger cities that made the honorable mention list like Orlando, Florida, Dallas, Texas, and New York City. The 2026 rankings were officially announced at the NAFA Institute & Expo (I&E), the fleet industry’s largest premier event.

This consistent national recognition highlights Chattanooga’s leadership in sustainable practices and fiscal responsibility, as the fleet department continues to optimize vehicle lifecycles and explore innovative ways to reduce the city’s carbon footprint.
