Join Outdoor Chattanooga for Paddle Smart Chattanooga, a hands-on flatwater paddling class focused on building essential skills, safety awareness, and confidence on the water. This instructional course is designed for beginners as well as paddlers who already own equipment but want proper instruction to paddle more safely and comfortably.
Outdoor Chattanooga’s experienced instructors teach this class using curriculum from the American Canoe Association, providing practical guidance that will help you make smart decisions while enjoying Chattanooga’s rivers and lakes.
During this class, you’ll learn:
- Proper boat setup and how to safely transport your craft
- Fundamental paddling strokes and boat control
- Safe entry and exit techniques
- Self-rescue skills and what to do if you capsize
- Navigation basics for flatwater paddling
- Tennessee boating laws and local regulations
- How to understand CFS (river flow) and how water levels affect paddling conditions
- Safety planning and local paddling resources
Bring your own kayak, canoe, or SUP (BYO boat), or reserve one of Outdoor Chattanooga’s recreational kayaks for the class.
Whether you’re taking your first paddle strokes or looking to gain confidence with your own gear, this class will give you the foundational skills needed to paddle safely and enjoy Chattanooga’s scenic waterways.
