City of Chattanooga to Conduct Brief Prescribed Burn at Heritage Park

Jump to:

Chattanooga, Tenn. (October 15, 2024) - The City of Chattanooga, in partnership with the Southeastern Grasslands Institute, will conduct a prescribed burn at Heritage Park on Wednesday, October 16 beginning at 1 PM.

The City of Chattanooga’s Fire Department will be on-site throughout the entire duration of the prescribed burn, which will cover approximately one acre of space and is expected to be complete by the end of the workday.

Important things to note:

  • The City of Chattanooga asks that residents refrain from visiting the affected area during the prescribed burn.

  • Residents near Heritage Park may see or smell smoke in the area during the burn.

  • The dog park and a portion of the park’s walking loop near the burn area will close at 10 AM and are expected to reopen before the park closes for the day.

  • Access to the trail used to get to the park from the Heritage Walk community will be restricted for a portion of the day.

Fire is a tool used by trained experts for effective landscape management. This prescribed burn is part of a larger initiative to restore and reconstruct a native grassland community, modeled after historic grasslands that once thrived in the region, as this process is vital for reducing wildfire risk, promoting native plant growth, and enhancing wildlife habitats.

For additional information, questions or concerns regarding the prescribed burn, residents are asked to dial 311.
