On September 13, 2024, a Chattanooga Public Works driver stopped by Station 9 in East Lake for help when they noticed an unusual hitchhiker on the arm of the trash truck. Firefighters carefully removed a scared iguana so he wouldn’t get crushed by the arm as it picked up trash cans. It’s unclear how the iguana ended up on the trash truck, but we are glad he’s safe! Thanks to the Public Works driver who took action to get this iguana some help.
The incident made headlines around the country. On October 8, 2024, McKamey Animal Center posted that the iguana had found his forever home thanks to his amazing foster! He received specialized care and attention. He had wounds on his face, his eyes were swollen shut, part of his tail was necrotic and he was suffering. An experienced exotics vet in town treated his serious health problems and he is now thriving in a custom built habitat.
