Staying Safe During Thunderstorms

When thunder roars, Chattanooga stays indoors. We want to ensure you and your family are prepared. Follow these simple steps to find shelter and protect your electronics during a storm.

1

The "30/30" Rule

  • Count: If you see lightning and hear thunder within 30 seconds, the storm is close enough to strike you. Seek shelter immediately.
  • Wait: Stay indoors for at least 30 minutes after you hear the last roar of thunder.
2

Indoor Safety Tips

  • Avoid Water: Do not shower, bathe, or wash dishes during a storm. Lightning can travel through plumbing.
  • Unplug: Unplug sensitive electronics (computers, gaming consoles) before the storm arrives to protect them from power surges.
  • Corded Phones: Avoid using corded landline phones. Cell phones and cordless phones are safe to use.
3

High Wind & Debris

  • Secure Your Yard: High winds can turn patio furniture, umbrellas, and trash cans into dangerous projectiles. Secure these items if a "Severe Thunderstorm Watch" is issued.
  • Reporting: If a tree falls on a public road, use the CHA311 App. If a tree falls on a power line, call EPB at 423-648-1372 immediately.
