CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (October 17, 2025) — The City of Chattanooga Department
of Community Development invites the public and the Lookout Valley
community to celebrate the remarkable career of Jimmy C. Long, longtime
Manager of the John A. Patten Community Center, at his Retirement Ceremony
and Open Hours Reception on Thursday, October 30, 2025.
The Retirement Ceremony will begin at 11:00 a.m. at John A. Patten
Community Center, located at 3202 Kellys Ferry Road, Chattanooga, TN 37419.
City, county, and state representatives will share remarks as the community
honors Jim’s 45+ years of service, leadership, and dedication to Lookout
Valley residents. Following the ceremony will be an Open Hours Reception
from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. This reception gives the community an informal
opportunity to share their remarks with Jim and the center staff.
Jim Long’s connection to John A. Patten began in the 1970s, when the
building transitioned from a school to a community center. From those early
days to now, Jim has devoted his life to ensuring the center remains a
welcoming and engaging space for everyone. Under his leadership, the
facility has grown into a cornerstone of community life, offering programs
such as pickleball, quilting, arts and crafts, and the beloved summer camps
for local youth.
As a lifelong resident and servant leader, Jim attributes the center’s
success to his staff and the strong spirit of community that defines
Lookout Valley. Guided by faith and purpose, he views his work as a calling
and hopes to leave the center just as he began — with dedication, humility,
and love for his community.

John A. Patten Community Center Manager. “It’s a place where people come to
feel safe, connect with one another, and build lifelong memories.”
The City of Chattanooga encourages residents, friends, and community
