New Family Skatepark Coming Fall 2026

The City of Chattanooga is excited to announce a significant upgrade coming to one of our key downtown recreational spaces. Thanks to approval from the Chattanooga City Council, the area currently housing the ChattTown Skatepark and Chew Chew Dog Park is slated for a $4.4 million renovation that will transform it into a modern, multimodal family amenity area.

Construction Begins November 10th
To prepare for construction, the existing ChattTown Skatepark and Chew Chew Dog Park will officially close on Monday, November 10th. Work will begin immediately to replace the current facilities with a dynamic new space.

This substantial investment will deliver comprehensive improvements to the area, including:

  • A brand new multimodal family skatepark.
  • A dedicated event space.
  • An updated dog park.
  • New, modern bathroom facilities.

The centerpiece of the renovation will be a state-of-the-art concrete skatepark, designed by California Skateparks, a world leader known for crafting exceptional skating environments. The estimated completion date for all these improvements is set for Fall 2026.

Access During Construction
We appreciate the community's patience during this renovation period. Please note the following access information:

The existing hockey rink will remain accessible throughout the construction period.

The pavilion parking lot will also remain open during park hours for those utilizing the hockey rink and other scheduled pavilion activities.

The City of Chattanooga looks forward to unveiling this newly renovated, state-of-the-art recreational space in 2026! We believe this transformation will significantly enhance our park system and provide a premier destination for families, skaters, and pet owners for years to come.

Updates and News

Update May 2025

The bids for the construction of the skate park were received in late November. Unfortunately, the total price included in the bid was significantly higher than the available city budget. We are currently working to refine the costs as well as seek new funding sources, so that we can start construction. Until we have a final contract for construction that is within budget, we will not be able to announce a construction schedule.  We are still hoping to be able to start construction as soon as possible, hopefully in the summer of 2025.

The project, as designed, includes substantial improvements in the form of a new concrete, 30,000+ square foot skatepark to replace our existing park.  Since the new park is planned for the same location as the existing park, we do expect a period of time when the existing skatepark will be removed for the construction of its replacement, and we will announce that temporary closing with as much advance notice as possible.

Other Updates and Project Facts

The new park will include something for everyone, such as:

  • A poured-in-place concrete skatepark, featuring approximately 30,000 square feet of skatable surface.
  • A new all-seasons restroom building, complete with skateable roof and integrated park entry signage,
  • A public plaza for gatherings, events, and generally to make the park comfortable for all its visitors, regardless of whether or not they are on wheels.
  • A new dog park, rebuilt in a new configuration and including plentiful new trees for much better shade.
  • A new independent entrance straight from W 20th Street which provides convenient Riverwalk access and public on-street parking.

Skating features have been chosen by the skatepark design team (California Skatepark) based on the numerous survey responses we received and balanced with the expected project budget.  Additionally, the park features a landscape design to soften the space and provide better shade than what the current park provides.
