Beginning in the 1930s, roads leading toward Chattanooga urged travelers to “See Rock City,” through bold white lettering painted on barns across the South. This simple directive triggered curiosity about the out-of-the-way attraction atop Lookout Mountain.
From the 1930s to the 1960s, over 900 scripted barns, originally hand-painted by Clark Byers, promoted Rock City throughout the South. Today, only about 40 remain. These iconic barns represent a lasting piece of Americana, showcasing American ingenuity, entrepreneurship and the enduring power of a simple advertising idea.
