CFD Puts Ladder 21 In Service

Jump to:

The Chattanooga Fire Department is expanding response capabilities in East
Brainerd. Ladder 21 went into service at Fire Station 21 on East Brainerd
Road on Friday, making it a two-company station. This provides more
substantial coverage for neighborhoods and businesses in that part of the
city.

Earlier this month, City Council members approved the Chattanooga Fire
Department’s request to purchase a $1.8 million 107-foot Smeal ladder truck
for Station 21. Fifteen firefighters are now assigned to that fire station
to staff the additional truck. Station 21 is already home to an engine
company, as well as a water tanker truck.

The additional truck and personnel at Station 21 are the result of funding
from the FY26 budget amendment that was passed by City Council in
September. The CFD will use an existing reserve apparatus at Station 21
until a brand new ladder truck arrives.

"Today marks a proud and historic moment for our department as we
officially place Ladder 21 in service. This new ladder company fills a
critical need in the East Brainerd and Hamilton Place communities—improving
our response times, strengthening our coverage, and enhancing our ability
to protect lives and property," said Chattanooga Fire Chief Terry Knowles.

This moment also represents an important milestone for our department’s
growth. For the first time since 2016, we have increased the number of
firefighters in our department. That growth reflects the expanding needs of
our city and our commitment to keeping pace with Chattanooga’s continued
development.

"I want to extend our sincere thanks to Mayor Kelly and the City Council
for their ongoing support and dedication to public safety. Their leadership
has made this possible—not only making our communities safer, but also
increasing the safety of our firefighters who serve them every day," Chief
Knowles added. "Ladder 21 stands as a symbol of progress, partnership, and
pride in service. This is an important step forward for our department and
our city."
