CHATTANOOGA, TN — As winter weather approaches, the City of Chattanooga
Department of Public Works is prepared to implement its comprehensive snow
and ice road treatment plan to ensure the safety and mobility of all
residents.
While conditions remain stable for now, the city is closely monitoring
weather models and shifting temperatures as it prepares for potential
inclement weather throughout the weekend.
Treatment Priorities and Operations
To maintain essential services, Public Works crews will prioritize primary
routes and access roads for:
- Hospitals and emergency medical facilities
- Fire and police stations
- Emergency responder routes
Once these critical areas are prepped, teams will move to secondary routes
that feed into the primary network. Crews will remain active through the
duration of the event to monitor for refreezing and retreat roads as
necessary. “Our crews have been on the ground since this morning, laying
down brine to prevent ice from bonding to the pavement,” said Ricky
Colston, Director of City-Wide Services. “We have approximately 5,000 tons
of salt ready for deployment. This inventory gives us the flexibility to
transition from brining to active salt spreading and plowing as the weather
shifts from snow to ice, ensuring we can respond to whatever conditions
this system brings.”
Service Adjustments and Resident Guidelines
- Leaf Pickup Suspended: All leaf collection routes are temporarily
suspended so that trucks and personnel can be redeployed for snow and ice
treatment. - Off-Street Parking: Residents are strongly encouraged to move parked
cars off the streets. This allows snowplows and salt trucks to treat the
full width of the roadway efficiently. - Travel Safety: Residents are urged to stay off the roads unless travel
is absolutely necessary during winter weather events.

priorizarán las rutas principales y las vías de acceso para:

- Estaciones de bomberos y de policía
- Rutas para servicios de emergencia
Una vez preparadas estas áreas críticas, los equipos se trasladarán a las
rutas secundarias que conectan con la red principal. Las cuadrillas
permanecerán activas durante todo el evento para monitorear la posible
formación de hielo y tratar las carreteras según sea necesario.
“Nuestros equipos están trabajando desde esta mañana, aplicando salmuera
para evitar que el hielo se adhiera al pavimento”, declaró Ricky Colston,
Director de Servicios Municipales. “Contamos con aproximadamente 5.000
toneladas de sal listas para su uso. Este inventario nos brinda la
flexibilidad necesaria para pasar de la aplicación de salmuera a la
distribución activa de sal y el despeje de nieve a medida que las
condiciones meteorológicas cambien de nieve a hielo, lo que nos permite
responder a cualquier situación que presente este sistema”.
