New funding would continue putting traffic safety research into action
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (July 7, 2026) – The City of Chattanooga is making greater strides toward traffic and pedestrian safety with the City Council reviewing the Comprehensive Safety Action Plan and applying for another Safe Streets for All (SS4A) Implementation Grant.
The Comprehensive Safety Action Plan and the City of Chattanooga Safer Streets database were created with prior SS4A funding. Additionally, a data-driven tech platform was funded to predict traffic safety risks along entire roadways so planners can prevent crashes before they happen.
The plan approaches traffic safety through the lens of mutual responsibility between drivers and the city to create optimal conditions for safe driving, including a “Vision Zero Policy” for minimizing traffic deaths.
This implementation grant would expand the infrastructure across the city, providing long-term safety improvements. The grant funding proposal includes a layered safety approach of detection, protection and survivability, including expanding traffic detection technology to more areas and modernizing emergency response equipment for rescue and collision recovery.
“The city continues to identify problematic roadways and address collisions quicker,” said Ryan Huddleston, Director of Intelligent Cities. “New traffic technology is essential to the city’s ability to protect Chattanoogans and advance our vision for safer streets. We’re hopeful that continued federal grant funding will help make these improvements a reality and allow us to keep building on the progress we’ve made.”
