CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (Jan. 22, 2026) – Mayor Tim Kelly has ordered flags to
fly half-staff across city buildings, grounds and facilities on Friday,
January 23, in honor of Tommie Brown.
Brown served Chattanooga in the Tennessee House of Representatives for 20
years. She passed away earlier this week.
“Dr. Tommie Brown moved Chattanooga forward through her social work, her
advocacy for our city in the Tennessee General Assembly and through her
leadership at UTC,” Kelly said. “Chattanooga wouldn’t be what it is today
without her legal work to ensure Black Chattanoogans were represented on
what became our current mayor-City Council form of government. On behalf of
the entire city, I extend my deepest sympathies to her family and all those
who knew her.”
