Standifer Gap Bridge replacement moving forward

Jump to:

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (Dec. 11, 2025) – The City is moving forward with replacing the closed bridge on Standifer Gap Road, a long-awaited project that will enhance safety and improve connectivity for residents in the Tyner area near Shallowford and Hickory Valley Roads.

The existing bridge, deemed structurally deficient, has been closed to traffic since 2016.

“When I ran for office, I pledged to residents that I would remain vigilant in getting this project moving forward, and I am thrilled to see it
advance,” said Council member Jenni Berz. “The next step will be for the City to work with the Tennessee Department of Transportation on the final preparations so we can open the bid process sometime this coming spring.”

The new bridge—located between Glencrofte Lane and Hamby Circle—will restore an important connection and provide an additional travel route for motorists.

“We’re happy to finally receive the federal approvals we’ve been waiting on so we can take out this unsafe bridge, get a new one built, and reopen that area to residents,” said Jerramy Wood, Administrator for the Department of Public Works. “As this project moves ahead, the community will continue to receive regular updates on the timeline and other important developments.”
