The spirit of the Volunteer State continues to shine in the midst of the devastation left by Hurricane Helene. Members of the Chattanooga Fire Department are back at home, but they did great work assisting our neighbors in Northeast Tennessee, including the heavily hit areas of Newport, Unicoi County and Erwin. Over the past few weeks, the CFD has sent search and rescue teams, hazmat personnel and incident management team members to provide manpower and resources.
Parks and Outdoors officials are working to maintain the landscape at Jack Benson Heritage Park by conducting a live burn on Wednesday afternoon (10/16/24). There’s a half-acre meadow at the park that’s planted with native seeds and it is part of the regular maintenance at the site to have periodic burns. Ash trees are encroaching on the grasses and altering the soil moisture. The burn will start at 1 PM because that will be the best time for humidity levels, as well as wind direction/speed.
Chattanooga, Tenn. (October 15, 2024) - The City of Chattanooga, in partnership with the Southeastern Grasslands Institute, will conduct a prescribed burn at Heritage Park on Wednesday, October 16 beginning at 1 PM.
The City of Chattanooga’s Fire Department will be on-site throughout the entire duration of the prescribed burn, which will cover approximately one acre of space and is expected to be complete by the end of the workday.

Several Hixson residents are receiving assistance from the American Red Cross following a duplex fire Friday afternoon. At 2:25 PM on 10/11/24, Green Shift companies were dispatched to the 5600 block of Moody Sawyer Road after 911 received reports that a house was on fire. Engine 22 advised that smoke was visible from Highway 153 and confirmed that there was a working structure fire when they got on the scene. Shortly thereafter, the fire broke through the roof.
Chattanooga, Tenn. (October 9, 2024) - The City of Chattanooga's Department of Wastewater has extended a helping hand to Mountain City, Tennessee, in the wake of Hurricane Helene's devastating impact. In a swift response to the crisis, Chattanooga has loaned two large generators to support Mountain City's damaged wastewater treatment plant.
The City of Chattanooga Department of Community Development invites the community to attend local fall festivals hosted at several community centers throughout October. Each festival is unique and features local organizations, resources for residents, entertainment, local shopping vendors, games, food, and fun for the entire family. All festivals are free to the public.

The Chattanooga Fire Department teamed up with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)—the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week for more than 100 years—to promote this year’s FPW campaign, “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!” The campaign works to educate everyone about the importance of having working smoke alarms in their home. According to NFPA, smoke alarms reduce the risk of dying in a home fire by more than half (54 percent).
