It was a busy Sunday for Chattanooga firefighters. At 12:06 PM on 12/15/24, Green Shift companies were dispatched to the 2200 block of Elmendorf Street for a residential fire in a duplex. On arrival, smoke was coming from the eaves of the multi-family dwelling. The fire was extinguished quickly and contained to one bedroom. Investigators learned that a nine-year-old child was playing with a candle, causing burns to his leg and foot. He was transported to the hospital and is doing ok. The American Red Cross will be assisting the impacted residents. Engine 4, Engine 6, Engine 15, Squad 7, Ladder 5, Battalion 1, Battalion 3, CPD, EPB, HCEMS and CFD Investigations responded. Parents: please talk to your children about the dangers of playing with things like matches, lighters and candles. This family has been displaced from their home right before Christmas and a child was left with burn injuries after this mishap.
At 1:30 PM on 12/15/24, Green Shift companies were dispatched to 751 Runyan Drive to the Arbors at Signal Mountain for an apartment fire. Firefighters had the fire out in approximately 10 minutes and checked for any extension. The American Red Cross will be assisting one elderly resident. There were no injuries. Two dogs were rescued by firefighters. The resident was home and having trouble with his apartment fireplace. He carried one of the logs out onto his balcony where it rekindled and caught the deck on fire. Engine 17, Engine 12, Engine 16, Engine 10, Engine 14, Squad 1, Ladder 1, Battalion 1, Battalion 3, CPD and HCEMS responded.
