Chattanooga Public Works Department Announces "Back to School Blitz" Initiative

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The City of Chattanooga Public Works Department is
proud to announce the ongoing efforts of  "Back to School Blitz," an
initiative designed to enhance student safety and community pride in the
weeks leading up to the new school year for schools within Chattanooga city
limits.

The "Back to School Blitz" is a comprehensive effort that focuses ongoing
Public Works operations on school zones across the city. Crews are
dedicated to a range of critical tasks, including:

Road and Sidewalk Maintenance: Repairing and maintaining the
infrastructure surrounding schools to ensure safe travel for students,
parents, and school staff.

Crosswalk and Traffic Marking Refresh: Repainting and refreshing
crosswalks and other traffic markings to improve visibility and pedestrian
safety.

Traffic Signal and Sign Inspections: Inspecting and ensuring all traffic
signals and signs are in proper working order to facilitate a smooth flow
of traffic.

Stormwater Infrastructure Check: Clearing and checking stormwater drains
and systems to prevent flooding and ensure safe passage.

Waste Management and Cleanup: Removing litter and debris to create a
clean and welcoming environment for students.

Schools that have submitted work orders are:

  • Red Bank Elementary
  • Hixson Elem, middle and high
  • Orchard Knob Elementary and Middle
  • Brainerd High
  • Dalewood Middle
  • Battle Academy
  • Calvin Donaldson
  • Clifton Hills Elem
  • East Lake Academy
  • East Side Elementary
  • The Howard School

In addition to these operational efforts, the Public Works Department is
partnering with the Chattanooga Department of Community Development to host
a community engagement component, "Fill the Truck Fridays," to support
local students. Residents are invited to donate school supplies at various
community centers throughout August. These events will also feature food
vendors, fun games, and a live radio broadcast.

"Fill the Truck Fridays" Schedule:

  • August 8th: Tyner Community Center
  • August 15th: Avondale Community Center
  • August 22nd: Chris Ramsey Community Center
  • August 29th: Hixson Community Center

"The 'Back to School Blitz' is a visible demonstration of that commitment.
We wanted to ensure that our school zones are as safe and welcoming as
possible, and we are excited to partner with the community to help provide
essential supplies for students through our 'Fill the Truck Fridays'
events."
