On August 4, 2024, at 9:20 p.m., Chattanooga Police and Chattanooga Fire responded to a commercial building fire in the 1800 block of Rossville Avenue. When officers arrived on scene, they found the building was on fire and secured the scene.
CFD's Engine #5, Ladder #5, Engine #3, Squad #20, Engine #9, Engine #4, Squad #1, Engine #14, Battalion #1 and #2 responded. Engine #5 and Ladder #5 arrived on scene and reported smoke visible from the front and rear of the building. Crews stretched hand lines into the structure and made a quick knockdown on the fire. The fire damage was contained to the single business with smoke damage to several neighboring buildings. There were no injuries reported.
During the preliminary investigation, bystanders advised officers that they observed a person checking the businesses' doors prior to the fire. The officers were able to obtain video surveillance of a suspect inside the business prior to the fire. The suspect description was sent to all officers working in the area. A person matching the suspect description was found by officers walking on East 10th Street.
CFD's Arson Investigators responded to the scene to assist with the investigation. CPD and CFD were able to obtain arrest warrants charging 21-year-old Michael Potter with Arson, Burglary of Business, and Vandalism. He was transported to Hamilton County Jail and Detention Center.
