Home Fire Safety Patrol geared at saving lives in Chattanooga

Jump to:

The Chattanooga Fire Department, in partnership with the International Association of Black Professional Fire Fighters Brothers United-Chattanooga, continues to expand community outreach and community risk reduction efforts in local schools with the Home Fire Safety Patrol program. Members of the command staff and our public educators were at Hardy Elementary School this week to kick off the program with second graders.

The Home Fire Safety Patrol helps students learn the importance of working smoke alarms, the meaning of the sounds they make, and where they belong in a home. Students also learn how to identify common home fire dangers, and how to plan for a home fire. The goal is to help families stay safe in Chattanooga through a proactive approach to fire prevention. Children learn how to spot and correct common home fire dangers and how to plan for a fast escape in case a home fire happens.

The program is built around several engaging classroom lessons that teach students the basics about smoke alarms and fire safety. There are also take-home sections to involve families in this life-saving learning experience. Plus, families can request free smoke alarms (while supplies last).

When the Chattanooga Fire Department implemented the program in schools several years ago, our educators would simply pick a school and work with the teachers and staff to conduct the necessary lessons. Now, we are more strategic by allowing our data to dictate our efforts regarding which areas of the city we want to focus on for fire prevention. We are taking the program to neighborhoods where the highest number of residential fires are
occurring.

Getting children to think about fire safety and prevention early on instills life-long best practices, reducing home fires and injuries over time. We are grateful to everyone who has played a part in bringing the Home Fire Safety Patrol to local classrooms!
