Garbage and Recycle Collection & Site Schedule

A fire at an abandoned house Saturday afternoon is under investigation. At 12:56 PM on 1/11/25, Green Shift companies were dispatched to a home in the 1000 block of N Hawthorne Street. Engine 4 arrived and found heaving smoke coming from the front of the structure. E4 forced the front entry door and located the fire in the kitchen. With E4's quick action, the fire was primarily contained to the kitchen. After primary and secondary searches were completed, no one was located inside. Within minutes, firefighters had the fire under control. There were no injuries.

A mishap with a kerosene heater started a fire at an Alton Park home Thursday morning. At 11:32 AM on 1/9/25, Green Shift companies were dispatched to a residence in the 100 block of W 45th Street after 911 received a call from an occupant advising that the heater had blown up and sparked a fire in the living room. A grandmother and baby made it out safely. Firefighters did an excellent job establishing a water supply quickly and getting a good knockdown on the fire. There were no injuries and the Red Cross will be assisting the impacted family.

Due to the threat of inclement weather, the City of Chattanooga Public
Works Department will suspend garbage and recycling collection for Friday,
January 10, 2025. 

As a result, all collection routes will be delayed by one
business day:

Friday’s routes will be collected on Monday.

Monday’s routes will shift to Tuesday.
-

Tuesday’s routes will shift to Wednesday.
-

Thursday’s routes will shift to Friday.
-

Friday’s routes will shift to Saturday.

Chattanooga, TN (January 8th, 2025) – The Department of Public Works is
ready to implement the city’s comprehensive snow and ice road treatment
plan to ensure the safety and mobility of all residents in the event of
inclement weather.

Chattanooga, Tenn. (January 7, 2024) - Today, the Chattanooga City Council voted unanimously to re-name the Chattanooga Hamilton County Family Justice Center the “Dr. Carol B. Berz Family Justice Center.” 

Councilwoman Carol Berz, who passed away in December, was the driving force behind the creation and support of the Family Justice Center as an advocate and elected official. 

Phenomenal work by Chattanooga firefighters as they prevented a residential fire from spreading Tuesday morning. At 9:26 AM on 1/7/25, Red Shift companies were dispatched to a home in the 2700 block of Stone Trace Drive off Tyner Road after neighbors called 911 to report the fire. Ladder 7 arrived and found smoke coming from the garage. Paint cans in the garage were impinged by fire, causing neighbors to report hearing several explosions. Ladder 7’s crew made an aggressive interior offensive attack with Squad 7 and within minutes, they had a quick knockdown on the flames.

The Chattanooga Department of Public Works will begin the milling and paving process for Wilcox Blvd between Shallowford Road and Greenwood Road starting Monday, January 6th. This project will be multi-phase and will require the following estimated timeline:

Phase 1: Milling Wilcox Blvd between Shallowford Road and Tunnel Blvd 1/6-1/10

Phase 2: Milling Wilcox Blvd between Tunnel Blvd and Greenwood Road 1/13-1/17

An East Chattanooga home sustained damage when the residential structure was struck by a vehicle Saturday night. At 6:33 PM on 1/4/25, Green Shift companies were dispatched to the 2600 block of Waterhaven Drive on initial reports of an explosion. CPD, CFD and Hamilton County EMS responded and found that a car hit a house, going through a portion of a front bedroom and into the garage. The elderly driver of the vehicle was entrapped and had to be cut out of the car by firefighters. He was transported to the hospital with unknown injuries.
